Pathways and Relations for Inclusion in Southern Milan

Area of action: Educational Poverty
running project
since September 2022

A prism refracts light into the colors it is made up of, likewise the PRISMI project brings out diversity, skills and personal talents, which, if recognized and cultivated, allow boys and girls to shine.

In Italy, statistics on early school leaving are still high. The main cause of this phenomenon is educational poverty. On one hand, it is due to economic poverty and educational fragility, on the other due to lack of awareness, on behalf of boys and girls, on their schooling.

This is a real emergency which can have dramatic consequences not only on the youth but also on the future of our country.

PRISMI is a two-year project which aims at contrasting educational poverty. It is divided into a series of consolidated actions aimed at students in middle school and in their last years of primary school, but also the teaching body, families and local communities.

The educational model which is proposed, includes expressive-art workshops, didactic support, academic orientation for children and families, to support their diverse hardships.

The PRISMI model is being implemented in 3 project partner institutes in Milan. Nevertheless, it is replicable, in whole or in part, also in other territories.

Fundamental years: middle school

Research upholds the crucial importance of middle school years in the lives of children. Hence, it is precisely on these school years that the PRISMI project focuses on. Actions are also extended to the last years of primary school. Particular attention is presented to the educational transitions that precede and follow them.

PRISMI aims at presenting boys and girls opportunities to recognize and enhance their personal, cognitive and non-cognitive skills, and, simultaneously, offer educational and psycho-educational support to the most vulnerable individuals.

In this way, the project seeks to empower children in picking up a solid set of knowledge, experiences, relationships and trust that makes them ready to face academic choices and pivotal life decisions.

PRISMI advances a schooling model which is fair, inclusive and of quality. It advances a school which puts children at the center. They are protected and guided by formal and informal educational figures, supported by their families and helped in case of vulnerability.

The ingredients of PRISMI

  • Youth as protagonists who bring to the table their aspirations, opinions and potential
  • Active relations between the school, the lives of the children and the territorial educating community
  • Attention to the specific needs of vulnerable students

The 9 actions of the project

Up to 40 hours of training for 60 teachers specifically on the topics of school inclusivity and student orientation.

Orientation courses for students, individual coaching for over 400 male and female students, training sessions for parents – always guided by trained pedagogues and psychologists.

Workshops for around 700 male and female students with the aim of strengthening and reviving mathematical and logical skills through classroom activities, technology and targeted courses for those with added difficulties. Particular attention is paid to gender didactics.

Targeted support for around 160 frail students achieved through group work and workshop experiences within the premises of the Educational Centers.

Classes targeted at around 320 primary school children with the aim of strengthening self-esteem, self-perception and management of emotions.

Classes aimed at more frail pupils in their last year of primary school and first year of middle school focus on group relationships and the disclosure of one’s personality. Guided by psychologists and pedagogues.

Workshops – inspired by poetry slam events, and led by performers and professional entertainers – aimed at enhancing expressive and relational skills.

The experience of discovering, narrating and documenting one’s neighborhood and,  thereby, learning to express opinions, expectations and ideas.

Activities for the local Educating Community to gain self-awareness and to stimulate the initiation, collaboration and active participation of the various educational actors (formal, non-formal, informal education).

Educational Centers

The work within the CIAI Territorial Educational Centers – advanced through the SÈI (Support for Education Italy) programme – is also part of the PRISMI project.

These are active premises within the school held two days a week during out-of-school hours. A staff made up of educators, artists and specialized personnel follow, in a targeted way, frail pupils brought to their attention by teachers.

Within the Educational Centers homework and study support are carried out in small groups. These are balanced with informal teaching activities such as games, expressive-art and psycho-educational workshops for strengthening non-cognitive and relational skills.

Our Centers are both physical and relational spaces whose task is to improve not only the academic performance of the children, but, above all, their emotional well-being, motivation and self-esteem.

As part of PRISMI three Educational Centers have been mobilized: Comprehensive Institutes Sottocorno, Filzi and Capponi.
